Custard Nakamura is a long-standing, reasonably priced bakery that has been open for almost 30 years, tucked away in a small side street in the Japanese neighbourhood. From the outside it looks like a tiny shop, but inside there's a wide choice of cakes and breads baked fresh every morning. The recipes are those of the Custard Nakamura bakery in Japan, as the shop brought the franchise over from there, and some of the key ingredients, such as mentaiko (spicy pollock roe) and butter, are imported too.

The one thing you mustn't miss here is the Mince Meat Sandwich, a big, chunky sandwich that sells out before the afternoon every single time. It's famous for being packed to bursting with filling, it's made with quality ingredients, and it's sold at a very reasonable price too.

There are lots of other bestsellers I'd love to recommend too, like the custard pudding, the coarse red bean bun, the choux pie, the pork curry doughnut, the strawberry shortcake and the fresh cream fruit sandwich, and there's dorayaki as well! If any of you fancy trying them, you've just got to go!

Opening hours: Open every day, 09.00–21.00
Location: 595/12 Sukhumvit 33/1 Road, Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana, Bangkok

Getting there: Take the BTS Skytrain to Phrom Phong station and come down on the side opposite the Emporium shopping mall, then walk to Soi Sukhumvit 33/1. About 50 metres into the soi you'll see the shop on your right, with a sign you can't miss.
